BRING YOUR ORIGINAL PARQUET FLOOR BACK TO LIFE

Parquet flooring requires specialist care because the grain direction, pattern and condition of each individual block must be considered during repairs, preparation and sanding. Unlike standard timber floors, parquet is made up of many separate pieces arranged in a specific design, meaning the restoration process requires a careful and considered approach.

Arbor Flooring combines professional equipment with over 25 years of experience restoring traditional wooden floors. We assess the parquet carefully before work begins, identifying any loose blocks, damaged areas or previous repairs that may need attention. Where possible, we retain and repair the original timber, selecting replacement blocks that provide the closest practical match in size, species and appearance.

DOES YOUR PARQUET FLOOR NEED RESTORATION?

Parquet floor restoration may be suitable if your floor has become:

Scratched or Heavily Worn

Dull or Discoloured

Loose or Moving

Uneven Between Individual Blocks

Damaged by Previous Building Work

Covered in Old Adhesive or Coatings

Affected by Missing or Broken Blocks

Exposed After Removing Carpet

Surface sanding can improve scratches and worn coatings, but parquet floors often require additional preparation before sanding begins.

Individual blocks may need to be secured, replaced or carefully adjusted to create a stable and consistent surface. We inspect these issues before providing a quotation so that the recommended repairs are included from the outset.

WHY CHOOSE ARBOR FLOORING FOR PARQUET RESTORATION?

Parquet flooring requires a careful approach because the grain direction changes between individual blocks. The pattern, age and thickness of the timber must all be considered during repairs and sanding.

Using an unsuitable sanding method can create an uneven surface, visible marks or unnecessary damage to the edges of the blocks.

Arbor Flooring combines specialist sanding equipment with practical experience repairing and restoring traditional wooden floors. We assess the condition of the parquet, identify any underlying issues and recommend a restoration process suited to the floor.

Where possible, we retain the original blocks and repair only the sections that require attention. Replacement timber is selected with consideration for its size, species, grain and appearance.

Common Parquet Floor Repairs

Loose Parquet Blocks

Parquet blocks can become loose when adhesive fails or movement develops within the floor. We can carefully secure affected blocks and prepare the surface correctly before sanding to help create a stable, long-lasting finish.

Missing or Broken Blocks

Missing or damaged parquet blocks can often be replaced using suitable new or reclaimed timber. We carefully match the size, pattern and appearance of the existing floor wherever possible.

Old Carpet
Adhesive

Parquet floors uncovered beneath carpets may have adhesive or residue from previous coverings. We assess the condition of the floor and recommend the most suitable preparation before restoration begins.

Fireplace and Hearth Alterations

Changes to fireplaces can leave gaps, concrete sections or missing parquet blocks. Where practical, we can repair these areas and continue the original pattern with carefully selected replacement timber.

Damage from Removed Walls

Removing walls or altering room layouts can leave sections of missing or mismatched flooring. We can restore these areas using suitable parquet blocks to help reconnect the existing floor pattern.

Uneven or Poor Previous Repairs

Previous repairs may use unsuitable blocks or materials that do not match the original floor. Where possible, these areas can be improved with better matched timber and a more consistent finish.

CAN EVERY WOODEN FLOOR BE RESTORED?

Parquet flooring is made from individual pieces of timber laid in repeating patterns such as herringbone, basket weave and other geometric arrangements.

Because the direction of the wood grain changes throughout the pattern, parquet must be sanded carefully and progressively. The aim is to remove the damaged surface and old finish without creating noticeable sanding marks or unnecessary variation between the blocks.

We use professional belt sanders, edging equipment and fine finishing machines with modern dust extraction. Although no sanding process is completely dust free, this equipment captures most dust at source and helps reduce disruption within the property.

The sanding process normally includes:

The amount that can safely be removed will depend on the thickness and condition of the parquet, including whether it has been sanded previously.

CHOOSING A FINISH FOR YOUR RESTORED PARQUET FLOOR

The finish affects the colour, sheen, durability and maintenance requirements of the restored floor.

We can recommend an appropriate product based on the timber, the room and how heavily the floor will be used.

Water Based Floor Lacquer

A lacquer creates a durable protective surface and is a practical choice for busy rooms.

  • Good resistance to everyday wear
  • Straightforward routine cleaning
  • Available in matt or satin finishes
  • Suitable for many living and commercial spaces

Hard Wax Oil

Hard wax oil penetrates the surface and enhances the natural grain and texture of the timber.

  • Natural appearance
  • Clear and coloured options available
  • Localised maintenance may be possible
  • Requires more ongoing care than lacquer

Floor Stains and Coloured Oils

A stain or coloured oil can be used to change the overall tone of the parquet.

The final colour can vary according to the timber species, age and condition of individual blocks. Sample areas may therefore be recommended before a colour is applied to the full floor.

CAN EVERY PARQUET FLOOR BE RESTORED?

Many parquet floors can be significantly improved, but restoration will not be appropriate in every situation.

Before recommending sanding, we consider:

Minor surface wear and localised repairs can often be resolved successfully. Floors with widespread movement, severe moisture damage or extensive missing sections may require more substantial work.

Where restoration is not practical, Arbor Flooring can also advise on the installation of a new parquet floor.

What To Expect During Floor Sanding

Furniture and removable items will normally need to be cleared from the room before work begins.

The time required will depend on the size of the floor, the number of loose or damaged blocks, the preparation needed and the chosen finish. A floor requiring substantial block repairs will take longer than one needing surface sanding and refinishing alone.

Replacement blocks may initially differ slightly in colour from the original timber. Sanding and finishing will help create a more consistent appearance, while natural ageing may soften the differences over time.

We will explain the expected programme before work begins, including drying times, when the floor can be walked on and when furniture can safely be returned.

After restoration, protective pads beneath furniture, suitable cleaning products and prompt attention to spillages will help preserve the finish.

PARQUET RESTORATION OR NEW PARQUET FLOORING?

Restoration is usually worth considering when the majority of the original floor remains stable and there is sufficient timber available for safe sanding.

It allows you to retain the age, natural variation and character of an established wooden floor.

A new parquet installation may be more appropriate when:

We provide both parquet restoration and new parquet flooring installation, allowing us to offer straightforward advice based on the condition of your floor rather than promoting one option in every situation.
